Tantalum metal pitot probes are great against strong
acids especially hydrofluoric acid (HF) making them
useful in chemical processing and semiconductor
manufacturing.

Tantalum’s corrosion resistance comes from its dense
oxide layer (Ta??O??) which resists HF even at high
concentrations (40-70%). Tests in 50% HF at 80°C showed
tantalum probes corroded <0.001mm/year, Hastelloy C-276
corroded 0.5mm/year, stainless steel failed in hours.
This resistance works for other strong acids too hot
sulfuric (98%) and nitric (70%) acids with corrosion
rates <0.01mm/year. A fertilizer plant test found
tantalum probes in 93% sulfuric acid stayed accurate for
3 years, nickel-alloy probes needed replacing every 6
months.
Tantalum is ductile so can be thin-walled (0.3-0.5mm)
reducing flow disturbance in narrow pipes. In a 25mm HF
pipeline a 3mm tantalum probe caused 2% pressure drop, a
thicker Hastelloy one caused 5%.
But tantalum is expensive (5-10x Hastelloy) and
reacts with strong alkalis, so only use in acidic
environments. For HF or high acid apps its performance is
worth the cost.
